Specific construction process of mechanical fixing method for TPO waterproof membrane on roof

2026-01-29

① Pre-construction preparation:

Before construction, all TPO roofing membrane and system accessories should be prepared according to the required specifications and have their quality inspected to ensure they meet relevant standards. Do not damage the original packaging of the TPO membrane and store it in a cool place, covered with tarpaulin.

② Substrate treatment:

The substrate must be flat, dry, and clean, free from hollow areas, loose sand, cracks, etc. Water, ice, or snow must be removed to prevent moisture absorption in the new roofing section and roofing system. Remove debris and foreign objects from the substrate before laying the membrane.

③ Installing the vapor barrier:

The vapor barrier should be laid perpendicular to the corrugation of the profiled steel sheet, and should be flat, continuous, and undamaged. The overlap width should be 100mm, and special adhesive tape should be used for bonding.

④ Mechanically fixed insulation layer:

The insulation layer should be laid continuously and tightly, with no gaps between adjacent insulation boards. When using double-layer insulation materials, they must be laid in a staggered manner and fixed with mechanical fasteners.

⑤ Mechanically fixed roll material:

First, lay out the lines. The laying direction of the roll material should be perpendicular to the corrugation direction of the profiled steel sheet. During construction, pre-laying should be done first. Arrange the naturally loose roll material on the base layer according to the outline, flat and straight, without twisting, and the overlap width is 120mm.

Secure the roofing membrane with fasteners, installing them according to the designed fastener positions. The edge of the fastener should be 15-20mm from the edge of the membrane. The center-to-center spacing of the fasteners depends on the local wind speed, the type of the structural substrate, the building height, and the width of the membrane; typically, the center-to-center spacing is 150-450mm.

⑥ Welding the membrane:

Use an automatic hot air welding machine or a handheld hot air welding machine to weld the TPO membrane with hot air. When the roof slope exceeds 1/13, it is inconvenient to use an automatic hot air welding machine; a handheld hot air welding machine is recommended.

Place adjacent rolls of material, forming a 120mm overlap at the location of the fasteners (along the length of the roll). The hot air welding width should be at least 40mm.

⑦ Detailed Joint Treatment:

Roll Joint Finishing: For TPO waterproof rolls, use professional finishing strips and screws to secure the joints, then seal with sealant.

Corner treatment: Additional roofing membrane is laid at inside and outside corners using a welding method. The additional membrane is folded, cut, and welded according to the shape of each corner. Prefabricated corner components are preferred.
